Compare the representations of gender and ethnicity in BeyoncĂ©’s Run the World, Girls music video and the music video for Dizzee Rascal’s Dream. In your answer, you must consider: How representations of gender and ethnicity are constructed through selection and combination of elements of media language The similarities and differences in the representations of gender and ethnicity How far the representations relate to relevant contexts You should refer to Levi-Strauss (binary oppositions), Barthes (semiotics), Gauntlett (identity theory) and Gilroy (post-colonialism) in your answer as well as any other relevant theory The two music videos I will be comparing include ‘Dream’ by Dizzee Rascal with ‘Run the world, Girls’ by BeyoncĂ© with regards to the representations of gender and ethnicity. The theme of ethnicity seems more present in Dizz...
Well done! I can tell both of you ladies have tried very hard for this production work.
ReplyDeleteI am seeing improvements in terms of your production so you should feel proud.
Areas of your work that stood out regarding your trailer:
-I enjoyed the distortion and quick cut edits between your scenes, I believe this was very effective in building up the tension
-The music you chose in terms of tempo and style complimented your scenes and helped build up the anticipation
-Nice mix between black and white shots, they broke up the trailer and kept it watchable
-Your edits between scenes as touched on before where mostly nicely done and timed.
Areas for improvement in regards to your trailer:
-As discussed the 1st scene with Brooke went on for too long (girl on train) be careful not to have over timed or under times sequences as these factors help to disengage the audience.
-As discussed "And a guy" but the reflection was that of a girl (simple measures to be taken if working in pairs for example, you could have tied your hair up or put a hood up and re-filmed)
-Scene with writing "always watching" again timed for too long
-Finally, your ending was quiet abrupt and out of sequence, the tension was built up with the flicker of different edits and music and then it fell slightly flat towards the end, where this is the part you need to make 'your mark' and sell your film through your trailer. Consider slow motion hand dropping a glass and watching fragments shatter or something more compelling...?
Poster: Overall I love the poster, I think it is very professional looking and I love the visual metaphor of your film name and the 'fractured' glass. However, having another poster which mirrored your film would have helped to strengthen your work and add some context.
Overall, good job I am looking forward to future work!
Best,
Fay
Poster Comments:
I liked the fact your 1st poster mirrored your visuals for your trailer, I believe your chosen image was strong in the sense it was simplistic but effective.Your second poster again was strong in catering for social media, very typical of the style/genre of online posters for your chosen genre, as appose to your 1st poster which you advised would be used mainstream I.e billboards, bus stops etc.
Areas of improvement for posters:
1st poster, reconsider the text and font size as it needs to be clear and engaging (name and clarity is important for marketing purposes) Additionally, consider having a review in the corner of mainstream poster, it makes it look more professional and engaging for your target audience.
Keep up the great work,
Fay
