David - Analysing a Computer Game Cover

To analyse a computer game cover - talk about the genre, audience and issue of representation.

The gaming cover for Battlefield 3 allows those who are going to buy the game what is going to be included and what it is about - this is to persuade people to buy it. The gaming cover uses several colours such as blacks, greys and oranges. The black and white colours makes the gam seem serious as well as showing that it is set at night - the small pop of orange could present fire or inner anger. The main character in the image is a male who is holding a large machine gun which connotes he is evil and the game is going to be very violent (it is likely to be ages at 18 because of the violence and strong language used). The strong, muscular man is walking towards the camera and he is making direct mode of address which makes him seem serious and some what scary; he seems in power because of the cargo gear he is wearing which also makes him seem masculine and in charge. In the background of the gaming cover there are tanks on the road which again connotes violence and danger - tanks are often associated with the army who fight wars which infers that their could be a war coming. Also, this relates to the title of the game 'BATTLEFIELD' which lets the gamers know there will be fighting and shooting included. The title is in capital letter which allows it to make a statement and draws the audience in and lets them know what the game is actually called - the colour white represents innocence and purity which is the complete opposite to the rest of the image and the name of the game (it juxtaposes). The empty background makes it seem ominous and allows the audience to interpret it in their own way however there are some buildings in the distance which shows it is in the dark this gives it an eery feel.

The game itself has multiplayer matches which sees players take on one of four roles: Assault, Support, Engineer and Recon. The Assault class focuses on and healing teammates. The Support class focuses and supplying ammunition. The Engineer class focuses on supporting and destroying vehicles. The Recon class focuses on sniping and enemies. The mechanics of the weapons have been changed to utilize the new engine: compatible weapons may have attached which can then be deployed when in the prone position or near suitable scenery, and provide a significant boost to accuracy and recoil reduction. Suppressive fire from weapons blurs the vision and reduces the accuracy of those under fire, as well as health regeneration. The Recon class can put a radio beacon anywhere on the map and all squad members will be able to spawn on the location of the beacon.

Statement of Aims

Statement of aims (500 words approximately) You will be required to complete a brief outline of your aims ad intentions for the media production that must be submitted with the production. This will be assessed with the production and will enable you to explain the ways in which you will apply knowledge and understanding of the theoretical framework to the production and target the intended audience.  In my music marketing product I will be focusing on a new artist who goes by the name of Poppy Smith by creating both a music video and magazine cover and  article to promote them as an artist. The label they will be working with is Columbia Records which is an American record label owned by Sony Music Entertainment.  In my music video I will have a variety of both narrative and performance to show not only what it’s like for an artist e.g. in the studio, but also the story of how people feel about themselves in the media – in terms of having to look and act ...
